Only animals of the same breed can mate; otherwise the offspring going back to the fourth generation will be of poor quality and impossible to register. Dwarf breed does give birth to about 8 babies per year; meat breeds produce up to 20 babies.

Young dwarf does are ready to mate at the age of 5 months; bucks are mature at 6 months old. Giant breed doe is mature at 8 months; bucks are ready to breed at the age of 9 months. A breeding rabbit business will usually have a photo of the types they carry and pictures of each variety.
